“Fruit Heights City wanted to start a Green Waste Recycling Program (GWRP) this summer. Residents who chose to participate would put their grass clippings, weeds, leaves, etc. into a separate garbage can provided by the county landfill. The city sent out postcards in April, but they didn’t get enough positive responses to move forward. Alexandria decided to help as a service project. She became quite knowledgeable about the GWRP by interviewing members of the city council and the manager of the landfill. And armed with a map of all the homes with their color-coded responses (pink for no, green for yes), she spent over 40 hours knocking on the doors of people who hadn’t responded. After explaining the program, including costs, Alexandria was able to persuade more than enough residents to participate. In fact, 33.5% of the positive responses were due to her efforts.”
